The Most Must-See Shows About Architecture

Architects find inspiration in the most unique of places, and one of the most fascinating parts of exploring how and why a building was constructed the way it was is to take a look into the mind of the person who designed it.

TV shows are a great place to showcase unique design ideas and provide context for them in a way that anybody can understand.

With that in mind, here are some of the most unmissable shows about home design.

Grand Designs

Possibly the benchmark for architecture television, Kevin McCloud’s series about ambitious clients and their eponymous architectural projects is utterly gripping television, in no small part due to the sheer variety of homes that are explored.

From converted water towers to houses made completely out of carved out stone, it is a show about very unique people who want to express themselves in an exceptionally grand fashion.

The Great Interior Design Challenge

From one extreme to another, The Great Interior Design Challenge is one of the better shows to try and ape the Great British Bake Off’s formula. Interior designers are pitted against each other to try and make over a room to a client’s demands.

Much like Bake Off, the appeal of the show is the rapport between the contestants, host and judges as they help each other when dealing with one catastrophe after another.

Another recommendation in this mould is Interior Design Masters, a spiritual successor with a similar level of charm.

The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes

Hosted by famed architect Piers Taylor and comedian Caroline Quentin, this show is pure outlandish aspirational television, as the pair explore some of the most architecturally striking homes in the world.

The key theme is overcoming challenging surroundings and not letting setbacks and issues get in the way of inspired design.
